Today is James Allen’s 40th birthday. Most of you know James as the dynamic host of The 80sRewind Show with James Allen. James was also one of the very first members of my core team when CBR first came to life in June of 2010. He is an incredibly talented guy and one of the truest friends I’ve ever known.
Happy Birthday, James!
For James’ birthday, I collected contributions from some of our friends and fans in order to commission illustrations from the very talented Tarja Petrell.
Happy Birthday to James from Harv, Jim, Jennette & Dan, Josh, Karen, Laura, Sarah, and me. And a massive thanks to these awesome CBR community members and friends for helping me make these illustrations, and a far bigger picture, start coming to life much sooner than planned. You might recognize the style and elements of the above illustrations, as they are similar to those Tarja drew for me last month.
I’ve been parading around as a cartoon on social media ever since these came into my possession, and I am having a blast! I have wanted an illustration of myself for as long as I can remember. Furthermore, I have been looking to add a professional illustrator to CBR’s core team of talent for a couple of years. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve said, “Man! If only..!”
And so, in James’ honor, this becomes an article about the unique talent that makes up my CBR core team. Because Tarja has agreed to join this esteemed crew, we are celebrating one of the first members among us with creative works from the latest to come aboard.
What the hell is the core team?
This is the first time in a long time that I have officially added anyone to CBR’s core team of volunteers. I do not do this lightly, for to be a CBR volunteer has come to mean a lot within our surrounding community. It not only means one is creative and talented, but the folks on my team are consistent in character. They love to give back to the community. They appreciate the true spirit of innovation and collaboration. They endeavor to always be learning and developing, and to help others do the same. They love to encourage and inspire. They are loyal, reliable, and trustworthy. They represent personalities of all kinds from places all over the world.
The members of CBR have no qualms about asking for help when they need it, nor expressing concerns.. for when they do, the rest of us know they have done due diligence to resolve an issue, are defeating their fears head-on, or simply want to create something awesome. We share the joys of a job well done, and we share the disappointments that sometimes come with the territory. The title of this article, “The Framework Is Strong”, happens to be a direct quote from James to me when I suffered a substantial strategic setback somewhere along the line. Recalling these words has served as motivational fuel many times since.
The CBR Team Page represents those who helped me build CBR into what it is today. Now that our reputation as a production studio is flourishing, and paid work is coming this way, this continues to be the first place I look for availability. Above all else, it represents a group of fantastic individuals who have proven a willingness to rally to the cause of community time and again.
The CBR team represents a full arsenal of talent, including but not limited to broadcasters, voice-over artists, desktop graphics professionals, filmmakers, technologists, programmers, managers, authors.. you name it.
And now, with Tarja, we have an incredibly talented illustrator among our ranks. As is the case with most of us, you should know that Tarja is capable of wearing many other hats. The first thing that caught my eye was her wonderful ability to capture a moment in time with photography.
The peanut gallery would never forgive me, if I wrote an article about my beloved team without dragging The Illustrious Jason Levine into it somehow. Indeed, I have heard Tarja’s name a time or two from Jason over the years in a very positive light, and I have seen friendly interactions between them on social media. I remember vividly that Tarja provided the “sonic inspiration” for Jason’s Sweet Child O’ Mine cover, because I was bestowed with the honor of “spiritual inspiration” for the same. (I believe she yodeled, and I read passages from the Old Testament. Not sure, but he killed it! Make of it what you will.)
I hope all my readers will hop over to Tarja’s portfolio and peruse the variety of wonderful works she has on display.
The Legendary James Allen
And now, back to the man of the hour.. The Legendary James Allen! As previously mentioned, James has been with me from the start of this whole crazy CBR ride. He is known for his easily identifiable voice, which he has used to give us station identifications, intros to many CBR shows, and the audio tracks for most of our event promo. He has written code for CodeBass Radio program schedule automation and has put many other things in place that help us technically under the hood. With 3 hours of carefully choreographed live entertainment, he delights the masses every time The 80sRewindShow comes on-air. Check out the official show trailer below, and if you haven’t heard the show yet.. make it a point to join us next Friday!
