Going Back to the 80s
Three years gone in a blink of an eye. It’s funny how quickly time can pass sometimes. It’s strange to be writing this post now when it only feels like a few months ago that I was writing a similar one for our Two year anniversary and ‘Summer Spectacular’ show a year ago.
A date for the diary – 2nd August 2013 – 1pm EDT / 10am PST – The 80sRewind Show with James Allen Three Year Anniversary
If you don’t already know me, I’m James Allen and I present a weekly show here on CodeBass called ‘The 80sRewind Show’. Every Friday at 1pm Eastern time, along with my glitzy sidekick ‘Princess Pickles‘ we take a journey back to the glorious decade of the 1980’s, moving from our starting point of 1980 all the way through to 1989. Our goal is to really recreate the texture and atmosphere of the decade. To do this we play awesome tunes from the top 1000 charts from the US, feature original movie trailers (along with some of their brilliant soundtracks), TV themes, TV commercials and look back at some of the trivia that defined the decade.
As you can probably tell we love the 80s.. No, we *really* love the 80s. So much so that we recently – to celebrate reaching our 3rd year of Friday 80s madness – had a professional photoshoot done in 80s clothing. Photos from which you can see throughout this post (provided by Michelle McCoy Photography). It was great fun and a cool way to do something special for this milestone in the history of the show.
THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY SHOW
To mark three years of being on the air, there will be a special live anniversary show this Friday (2nd August 2013 – 1pm EDT / 10am PST). Looking back over three really awesome years of doing the show I’ll be featuring clips from our 3rd ever show from the 30th July 2010 (I will cringe), looking back at some of the best movie trailers (and soundtracks), the best TV themes and some of the most memorable TV commercials we’ve ever featured. Not just that but we’ll also be revisiting our classic ‘A-Team Feature‘ to hear some of the best BA and Murdock clips, playing the first ever Italo Disco track we had on the show back in 2012, hearing more from the Swedish He-Man, playing some of the very best music we’ve ever had on the show and lots more. We may also hear the pure 80s bizarreness of Mister T rapping. There will be an open request policy running throughout the show so you can request any track you want from the 80s.
We’ll also be taking a look back at the most memorable moment of the entire three year run of the 80s Rewind show, when I (dressed as Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice) asked Princess Pickles (dressed as Miss Santa) to marry me live on air during the 2012 Christmas Special, in the middle of the infamous ‘Princess Pickles Wine Review‘. Never seen before video footage will be showing on the webcam of this epic moment in the history of the show.
We’re really excited to be celebrating this milestone with the fantastic listeners of CodeBass Radio. Please join us if you can for a real party to end the week and kick start the weekend.
Check out our official website 80sRewindShow.com on Friday when the show is on to request your songs and access the live studio webcam.
THE PAST THREE YEARS
It’s been a wild three years. Starting as essentially an impromptu test of an idea I had for a radio show – back on the 16th July 2010 – it soon became a regular fixture every Friday and began to build up a loyal following of wacky listeners. I say ‘wacky’ with great fondness as the awesome people who tune in to hear me spout about all things 80s every week have become true friends.
I started the show simply by playing music from the top 1000 charts and moving from 1980 to 1989. I then felt that to really take people flying back to the 80s we should feature TV show theme tunes. This proved to be very popular as each one had a way of transporting many listeners back to their childhood or teenage years with a few notes of a popular show. From here I expanded into original movie trailers and the journey really began. This led organically to exploring the soundtracks of some of the classic movies and uncovered some real musical gems – along with even more memories. Not long after movies were introduced I began to explore TV commercials from the decade and found that there really are some crazy ones or those that remind us of some of the quirkiness of the decade (clap on, clap off).
As time passed I began to develop regular features focusing on such 80s delights as the montage sequence (with fists in the air soundtracks), 80s action cartoons (with incredible theme tunes and inappropriate plots – the Rambo cartoon anyone), the European dance genre Italo Disco and “Action Heroes Of The 80s” where we celebrate the movies of some of the action heavyweights the 80s such as Arnie, Stallone and Van Damme. Mister T became a big part of the show and he often pops up with quotes from the A-Team or his opinion on the more ‘romantic’ ballad type tracks we sometimes play on the show – often in the form of ‘shut up fool’ or ‘noooo’.
All in all, the past three years have been a fantastic experience for both myself and Princess Pickles. While it’s sometimes been tiring and challenging to put together a fully packed 80s radio show each week – spending many long hours of research and planning – the end result has always been worth it. To get the opportunity to kick off the weekend with a truly wonderful group of fellow 80s lovers each Friday is a brilliant experience. It is the listeners who make this show what it is – a retro end of week party.
Where else would I get the excuse to wear a Sonny Crockett outfit….
