Senior Multimedia Application Developer

My role as Senior Multimedia Application Developer at the University of Denver allows me to explore many dimensions of Adobe technology but my focus has always been on the Flash Platform. You know those charts Adobe often presents showing all the different facets of the platform and how everything hooks together? Well, my job entails utilization of all those products, frameworks, and services along with other products in the Creative Suite to create systems and tools which support the wider university. It’s a REALLY sweet gig!

We’ve created a number of systems around the platform; the most well known being the CourseMedia™ system. This system encompasses a series of web and desktop applications which expose a fully cataloged repository of digital objects to members of the university community for use in specific courses. These collections include audio, video, and image objects; all either served or verified through Flash Media Server instances dedicated to serving these objects up through the system’s many access points.

Adobe Education Leader

As an Adobe Education Leader, I’m able to interface directly with Adobe in all matters pertaining to Adobe technologies in education, but also specific products, runtimes, platforms, roadmaps, advisory boards, and so forth. The education team at Adobe is a really wonderful group of people and I count myself very fortunate to be able to work so directly with them on various projects. The position also affords increased opportunities for networking, collaboration, speaking engagements, and other desirable activities within the designer/developer professions. It is an absolute honor to be serving as an Adobe Education Leader! I gain so much from my involvement with Adobe and the community and hope to continue serving in this position for years to come.

An Early Morning Letter, Displaced

An Early Morning Letter, Displaced” is a project I began in 1999 originally meant as a neuvue-poetic vehicle. I was writing a lot of poetry at the the time and had the idea to produce some sort of structured ambient backdrop to perform live recital against. I never did get around to doing any live performances as I found it much more constructive to generate fully realized audio pieces in the studio. Since then, I’ve produced two EP-length and two full-length collections of work along with a bunch of unreleased material, covers, remixes, and so forth. These albums have now all been released under my side-business and record label, Fractured Vision Media, and are available for purchase through iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, and so forth.

In some sense, “An Early Morning Letter, Displaced” is anti-music. I do not adhere to any specific genre or method- most tracks begin as pure experiment and many never leave that initial phase of development. When I do cling to something though, I try and flesh it out in the most meaningful way I can; adding layers of sound to some portions and stripping back to the bones when needed to create an honest, labored piece of work. For me it is not about producing something that will entertain but rather something that conveys what is raw and deep- buried in some dark place within the heart and mind. It is not meant for light listening by any means and is therefor inaccessible to most people.

Emergent Collective One

“Emergent Collective One” is a project that is very important to me. Early this year I began noticing that a lot (a LOT!) of Flash and Flex developers were involved in some sort of audio work as well. This prompted me to put a call out to the community to discover which of these artists would be willing to put forth a track toward a community compilation. The response I received was beyond anything I expected to achieve. Many of the contributors are VERY well known in the community and honestly I cannot imagine any of these tracks being absent from the compilation as it stands today. I continue to thank them every chance I get for being so good as to contribute to this effort.

In July, after receiving all the submissions, I finalized the disc along with a digital art booklet made available as an embedded Flash experience and PDF download. The music is released under a Creative Commons license and can be downloaded for free in both CD-Audio format to be burned to CDR or as a packet of high quality MP3 files. The response has been overwhelming; 20 days since release and we have recorded 2,686 playbacks through the OSMF-based iWebTunes player, and a total of 430 downloads! I want these contributors to receive the recognition they deserve in both the areas of programming and audio composition and strongly encourage continued support from the community.
